STAY GOLDEN

GOLD FILLED | what does it mean

When deciding on your bling a lot of terms come up — and I’m sure all you want to know is: What isn’t going to drive my skin nuts or turn me green? Well babes — here’s the gist of it.

The most popular types of gold jewelry are Solid Gold, Gold Filled, and Gold Plated.  There are pretty significant differences between the three.

  • Solid gold is of course a high end, lovely piece of jewelry.

  • Gold filled is the next level AKA an amazing, quality (lower cost) alternative to solid gold. This is our favorite type to work with in O M + M designs.

  • Gold plating or vermeil is the lower level (cheapest), and also the most common type you will find. It requires a bit of maintenance to keep it in good condition. Gold plated tends to tarnish and can oftentimes irritate the skin (if you have a metal allergy) or turn it green. Anything gold plated works great as long as you do not expose it to oils or damp skin.

At O m + m, we make all of our necklace chains gold filled (hypoallergenic), while our charms / pendants are either gold filled or gold plated.

So What does Gold Fill consist of?

It's an actual layer of gold-pressure bonded to another metal. Gold filled is not to be confused with gold plating as filled literally has 100% more gold than gold plating. Gold filled is much more valuable and tarnish resistant. It does not flake off, rub off or turn colors. anyone who can wear gold can wear gold filled without worries of any allergic reaction to the jewelry. Gold filled jewelry is an economical, hypoallergenic alternative to solid gold.

We hope this post helps and that it makes you love our accessories even more! Next time you buy jewelry from any brand, pay attention to the metal content. O M + M has competitive prices for gold filled designs, so you get a lovely necklace that will last, and not mess with your pretty skin.

Love,
